Abstract

The Armenian roots ազգ, ազն, which have several derivative forms in Armenian and parallel forms in other Indo-European languages are investigated. It has been revealed that the Armenian root ազգ which has parallel forms in Pehlevi and Greek languages only with the meaning «branch», is a native Armenian word. In other Indo-European languages, particularly in Romance, Germanic, Slavonic and Baltic languages, it appears as an adjective-forming suffix or as a suffix in words denoting possession to a nation, race, kind, or denoting origin.
