The trends in the development of automated design methods for modern submicron in
tegrated circuits (ICs) are associated with the relentless growth in the degree of integration
and complexity of ICs. This leads to increased sensitivity and correlation of the parameters
considered, which significantly impacts the requirements for automated design tools under
tight project deadlines. A review of literature and the experience of leading global compa
nies in electronic design automation shows that the primary way to enhance the efficiency
of automated physical design of ICs is to create and utilize design tools that account for the
influence of various parameters on the performance of ICs, while also facilitating the reduc
tion of design time.
Multi-parameter optimization is a critically important task in integrated circuit (IC) de
sign. It requires consideration of numerous factors and parameters, such as physical con
straints, minimization of power consumption, optimization of performance, and manufac
turing costs. Modern IC design technologies are becoming increasingly complex, and tradi
tional methods of element placement require constant refinement to ensure their effective
ness and compliance with requirements. In this regard, multi-parameter optimization in IC
design is attracting more attention from researchers and engineers striving to create solu
tions capable of addressing the growing complexities.
The goal of this article is to examine the main approaches and methods of multi
parameter optimization in the physical design of ICs, including the application of genetic
algorithms, quadratic assignment methods, matrix transformations, and other modern tools
such as design rule checking.
