Abstract

At numerical simulation of electromagnetic fields, the finite element method is often used. This method assumes that the study domain is divided into small elements within which the magnetic permeability is assumed to be constant. Within each element, the electromagnetic potential is assumed to be linear. Thus, the electromagnetic potential is approximated by a piecewise linear function, its graph consists of triangles, the projections of which on the OXY plane make up a mesh of triangles.

In recent years, a magnetorheological fluid has been used in many innovative designs of various electromagnetic devices, numerical simulation of the fields in the presence of a nonmagnetic fluid with embedded grains of magnetic material is of particular interest.

The paper proposes an automated system for modeling the electromagnetic field by the finite element method for domains containing subdomains with magnetic grains. Particular attention is paid to the creation of triangulation in subdomains with a granular structure.

An algorithm for triangulation of granular subdomains has been developed in compliance with the following conditions. The requirement for the homogeneity of the environment within each element must be strictly met. The interfaces between the media should go along the boundaries of the triangles and not go inside the element.

The presence of subdomains with a granular structure complicates the coordination of location of the vertices of the triangles at the boundary between the continuous media and the granular inclusions. A special approach has been developed for triangulation near the border between the media.

An example of the domain triangulation obtained by using the developed algorithm is given. The domain contains granular subdomains, current-carrying winding, and solid steel parts.
