Abstract

In the restoration department of the Matenadaran, scientific researches are being carried out to strengthen the ancient leather covers to save their appearance, to protect them from moisture, mechanical and chemical influences, as well as to improve their exploitation properties. Covering leathers are less contaminated and easier to clean mechanically, so the painled cover is very important. The cover should meet certain reguirements set to its maintenance. The above - mentioned conditions can be met only in case of accurate selection and combinations of final processing materials by proper preparing the processes prior to leather covering dyeing. The coating dyes that are used in the final leather processing consist of the following components, coatings that form the basis of the coating membrane, pigments (pigment concentrate or paste), plasticizers, solvents, as well as a number of excipients.

It is known that the ancient medieval leathers were not coated with finishing paint due to the lack of such materials. Modern leatherwork is based on in-depth scientific research, which allows coating processing to be more accurate and targeted.

The final processing of medieval leathers in the present work is carried out by the method of coating dyeing, using different coatings, which have a positive effect on the exploiting properties of the coating.

Exploiting properties of the coating means cover weakening due to multi-cycle deformations, light, weather effects, contact stability, adhesion, etc. In our research we studied and assessed the important properties of leather coverings.
