SEVERAL SEMITIC BORROWINGS IN THE ARMENIAN LANGUAGE

Abstract

The article is devoted to the problem of foreign borrowings in the Armenian language, particularly, to semitic borrowings. Etymological analysis of several Armenian roots which are thought to be borrowings from semitic languages shows that these roots have parallels in some Indo-european and Fenno-ugric languages which either have been ignored or considered as random coincidences. The latest studies in the field of nostratic linguistics show that the question of foreign borrowings in the Armenian language demands new approaches in investigation.
