SOME SEMANTIC FEATURES OF TECHNICAL TERMS IN ENGLISH

Abstract

Some semantic features of technical terms in English are considered. The terms penetrate into any field of science and reveal newly created and already existing concepts of technology which serve as names of new realities and phenomena.                    

There are certain requirements for the selection and construction of technical terms in English. Different linguistic devices can be used to form any term that meets those requirements. It is true that the analysis of terminology in various technical disciplines and branches shows that the common ways of forming technical terms in English is affixation, compounding and abbreviation, but there is another way of forming technical terms that can change the meaning of the word.

The most important way of forming technical terms in English is changing the meanings of the words. The word, already existing in the language, is often used as a technical term. The latter acquires a certain meaning in the given system of terms because another new meaning is added to the previous meanings of that word.
