ETYMOLOGY OF THE ARMENIAN WORDS ՆԱԽԱՐԱՐ, ՆԱՀԱՆԳ, ՆԱՀԱՊԵՏ, ԻՇԽԱՆ, ԲԴԵՇԽ, ԱՇԽԱՐՀ

Abstract

Several Armenian words with the component նախ-/նահ- (նախարար, նահապետ, նահանգ), as well as the words իշխան, բդեշխ, աշխարհ have been studied. The compari­s­on of some Indo-European and non-Indo-European languages shows that the oldest m­eaning of the component նախ-/նահ- is «to look, to see». Following this assuption, we may conclude that the real meaning of the root in the words իշխան, բդեշխ, աշխարհ is the Armenian word աչք «eye».
