Abstract

The results of to the study of sorption additional purification of water from micro-amounts of priority organic pollutants periodically present in water are presented. Purification of water from phenol and chlorophenol using dried, chopped pomegranate peel, pomegranate peel modified with phosphoric acid, as well as activated carbon obtained from it is studied. The importance of this work lies in the fact that the berry-fruit drink consists of about 90% of water. And the quality of the water used must meet the requirements of the current regulations. Any extraneous chemical compound, moreover toxic, in the original water will inevitably spoil the quality of the produced drink. In the production of fruit drinks and wines, pomegranate derivatives occupy a special place and are very popular. In this work, it is proposed to use the wastes of "pomegranate production" as water purifiers, thereby creating a possibility of also using production waste - pomegranate peel.

Modified (treated with phosphoric acid) pomegranate peels show an adsorptive activity in removing phenol and chlorophenol from an aqueous solution. A comparative study has shown that a sample treated with phosphoric acid shows a higher adsorption capacity compared to an unmodified analogue. The high adsorption activity of activated carbon from pomegranate peel has also been noted. However, the relatively low activity of the latter in relation to the modified peel suggests that, considering the economic costs, it is more expedient to use the modified analogue.

The proposed method can serve as a tool for additional purification of water from organic compouds to obtain high-purity water to be used in food production, in this case, in the manufacture of fruit and berry juices.
