Abstract

The issue of energy storage is one of the most relevant and thoroughly analyzed scientific and technical challenges today. From this perspective, the article attempts to present, as thoroughly as possible, the energy storage systems that can play an effective role in solving specific problems. Specifically, five systems for electrical energy storage are discussed (mechanical, thermal, chemical, electrochemical, and electrical).

Among these, particular attention is given to rechargeable electrical energy storage devices, including those used in modern electric vehicles, and potential future pathways for their further application are highlighted. The article also touches upon inductive, pneumatic, and flywheel storage systems.

The paper examines in detail the issues related to the use of pumped-storage hydroelectric plants for covering peak electrical loads and during the decline in load during off-peak periods. It provides a concise description of international experience and the main design solutions, clearly noting the essential structural elements required for the operation of pumped-storage hydroelectric plants (upper reservoir, lower reservoir, water intake structures, water conduits, etc.), as well as the main principles of classifying these plants based on various characteristics.

The article also discusses thermal energy storage systems.
